Our shari’a scholarS - Global Recognition

Khalij Islamic has strong relationships with many of the world renowned Shari’a scholars who are experts in the field of Shari'a and Islamic finance. Currently the Khalij Islamic Shari’a Scholars consist of Dr Hussain Hamed Hassan, Dr Ali Al Qaradaghi, and Dr Aznan Hassan. Dr Hussain Hamed Hassan is Chairman of the Khalij Islamic Shari’a Scholars and under his guidance, additional Shari’a Scholars are identified and engaged in order to fulfil the needs and requirements of our various clients. A brief profile of each of our current Scholars is set out below:

Dr Hussain Hamed Hassan

Dr. Hussain did his PhD in the Faculty of Sharia from Al Azhar University, Egypt, Masters in Comparative Jurisprudence from University of New York, USA and graduated in Law and Economics from University of Cairo, Egypt. In a long professional career, spanning over half a century, he has been a prominent scholar and teacher of universal dimensions, having established Islamic universities and Islamic faculties in various parts of the world including, Makkah, Islamabad, Kazakhstan and Libya.

He has been Advisor to the Presidents of various Islamic Republics and most recently prepared the Islamic banking law for Kazakhstan, an advisor to Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, President of the Islamic Conference of the Muslim World and General Secretary of the Muslim World League, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Hussain is also the President of the United States Muslim Jurists Association.

Dr. Hussain is Chairman, Sharia Supervisory Board of several Islamic financial Institutions including Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates Islamic Bank, Sharjah Islamic Bank, Ajman Bank, Amlak Finance, Tamweel PJSC, National Bonds Corporation, Liquidity Management Centre, AMAN Takaful Company, Jordan Dubai Islamic Bank and others besides being core member of the Sharia Board of Islamic Development Bank and AAOIFI. Dr Hussain has supervised conversion of several conventional financial institutions into Islamic ones, besides converting Dubai Financial Market (DFM) as the world’s first Islamic stock exchange. He has given many landmark structures to the industry, including World's 1st: Convertible and Multiclass Sukuk, Currency and Rate Swaps, to name a couple.

He has also supervised translation of Holy Quran into Russian language and 200 other Islamic books into different languages. He himself is the author of 21 books and over 400 extensive articles and frequently presides over Islamic academic & financial conferences, seminars and workshops in different parts of the globe.

Dr Ali Al Qaradaghi

Dr. Ali Al Qaradaghi received his PhD in the area of contracts and financial transactions from Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt in 1985. He is currently a Professor of Islamic financial contracts and heads the department of Islamic jurisprudence in the college of Shari'a and Islamic studies at the University of Qatar. Dr. Al Qaradaghi presently serves on the Shari'a Boards of many Islamic financial institutions in and outside Qatar including Emirates Islamic Bank and Dubai Islamic Bank in the UAE, Investment House and Investors Bank in Bahrain and First Investment in Kuwait.

In addition, he is a founding member of many charitable organisations and international Islamic jurisprudence bodies. He is the author of many research articles on contemporary issues in Islamic finance and banking. He has more than eight books published and six new books in various publication stages on topics including Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic thought.

Dr Aznan Hasan

Dr Aznan Hasan received his degree in Shari’a from the University of al-Azhar, completed his Master degree in Shari’a from Cairo University, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wales, Lampeter, in the United Kingdom.

Dr Hasan is an Assistant Professor of Islamic law at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is also the President of the Association of Shari’a Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS) and a member of the Shari’a Advisory Council for Bank Negara & the Securities Commission of Malaysia. Dr Aznan holds Shari'a Board positions in various organizations including as Chairman of the Shari'a Supervisory Board of ACR Retakaful (Bahrain) and as member of the Shari'a Supervisory Boards of Barclays Capital (UK), ABSA Islamic Bank (South Africa), Khalij Islamic (UAE), Maybank Investment Bank (Malaysia), and Amanahraya Berhad (Malaysia). He is also the Shari’a Advisor to the Islamic Unit Trust Schemes & Islamic Securities Commission of Malaysia, and a member of the National International Zakat Organisation (IZO) Coordination Committee, an advisory body established under the Prime Minister’s Department in Malaysia.
